FKCC Offers Summer Coral Reef Courses in Bonaire

This summer Florida Keys Community College will once again offer its popular summer field courses on coral reef ecology and management at Bonaire’s Captain Don’s Habitat. The courses will teach scientific techniques for assessing coral reef health and monitoring reef fish populations. While each course will be offered for college credit, unlike the past, this year will include a non-credit option for lifelong learners. There are no course prerequisites for the non-credit option.

“In addition to our regular students, this year we’re responding to requests by divers who aren’t interested in academic credit, but do want to have a much more in-depth understanding of how coral reef operate, and the challenges they face,” says FKCC Marine Science Professor, Dr. Alex Brylske. “Our three successful years of prior experience at Captain Don’s has shown that this would be an ideal opportunity and location to make this unique educational experience available not only to college students, but to any interested diver.”

For more information, including full course syllabi, contact: Dr. Alex Brylske at 305-809-3148 or alex.brylske@fkcc.edu.

Calling Poets and Poetry-lovers to
FKCC’s 7th Annual Poetry Reading

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Florida Keys Community College invites all poetry writers, aficionados and novices in the community to its seventh annual Poetry Reading on Thursday, April 24, from 2:00p.m. to 3:30p.m. in the library on the Key West Campus.  Led by Professor Hilary Parmentier’s poetry writing class, the open mic event will feature recitals of classic, contemporary and self-crafted poems by students, faculty, staff and community members.

To set the stage, the students have designed “found poetry” displays created by arranging books so their stacked spines spell out poetic verses.  Directions will be posted to guide and encourage people to add their own poems to the display.
“The class this year is excited to continue with the tradition of hosting the event and putting their own spin on it with the display,” said Parmentier.  “They have all kinds of poems to share at the reading and on the display, so it should be fun.”

Anyone interested in sharing poetry at the event is asked to contact Parmentier at hilary.parmentier@fkcc.edu to schedule a place in the program.
